Confirm which Delaware County and which clearance

A Delaware County background-check request needs a state and a purpose. Ohio and Pennsylvania have different official routes; these examples are not every county with that name. The State of Delaware’s process should not be selected merely because “Delaware” appears on a form. Ask the employer, licensing office or other recipient for the exact check name, required scope and delivery address before paying.

A county court docket can explain a particular case but does not replace a state criminal-history clearance. For Ohio fingerprinting, BCI and FBI are separate choices. Pennsylvania PATCH searches Pennsylvania law-enforcement criminal-history records, not federal records. Additional purpose-specific clearances, such as a child-abuse clearance, have separate processes and should be confirmed with the requesting organization.

Ohio: take the recipient’s instructions to fingerprinting

Delaware County Sheriff accepts adult fingerprinting walk-ins on a first-come basis at the Concealed Carry office, 1776 State Route 521, Delaware, OH 43015. Published hours are Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Sign in at the lobby kiosk. For questions or a schedule check, call 740-833-2801 or email [email protected] before traveling.

Bring valid driver’s-license or state-ID identification, know your Social Security number (the card is not required), and bring the exact address where results must be mailed. Obtain the required BCI and/or FBI reason codes from the requesting organization. An unclear code or destination should be resolved before submission; paying for both products does not ensure the result reaches the right recipient.

Ohio: distinguish the local service charge from statewide fees

Sheriff service Published charge
BCI only or FBI only $35
Both BCI and FBI $70
Ink fingerprint cards $10 for two cards
Credit-card payment Additional $1.50–$3, depending on total

The Sheriff accepts credit card, money order, check or cash, with exact change requested for cash. Returned-check charges can also apply. These are the Sheriff’s local service prices; they are not interchangeable with Ohio BCI’s $22 personal-history base fee or another WebCheck provider’s charge. Confirm which service your organization accepts before choosing a cheaper-looking route.

Ohio BCI generally receives fingerprints electronically through WebCheck or card scan unless an exemption applies. The Sheriff’s service page does not publish a guaranteed result-delivery time. Keep the transaction details and result recipient information, and direct processing questions to BCI at 877-224-0043 when appropriate. A fingerprint appointment’s completion is not confirmation that the recipient has received its result.

Pennsylvania: use State Police PATCH or the matching mail form

Delaware County, Pennsylvania’s official directory routes background checks to Pennsylvania State Police and civil/criminal court records to the Office of Judicial Support. For the standard State Police product, use PATCH or mail form SP 4-164. The individual check is $22; a notarized copy adds $5, and PATCH’s current notice requires notarized requests to be submitted by mail.

Volunteer checks use PATCH’s volunteer route or SP 4-164A, are free and cannot be notarized. Individual access-and-review uses mail-only form SP 4-170, costs $20 and also cannot be notarized. These are different products: do not select a free volunteer check when the recipient requires another clearance or assume access-and-review is the standard employment response.

PATCH’s notice effective April 22, 2026 adds 2% to online credit-card transactions. For a single $22 check, that is $0.44, making $22.44 before any other separately selected service. Its notice exempts registered users and mail requests paying by check from that fee. Mail payment instructions call for a certified check or money order. Confirm the selected order total before submission.

Save the certificate and interpret its status correctly

PATCH no longer mails the result of a request made on its website; the requester must print the Record or No Record response. Save the control number, request date and name exactly as entered. Those details are used by Record Check Status. For a mailed request, the State Police helpline can supply the control number: 888-783-7972, option 1.

Some no-record responses are immediate. Requests needing investigation can show “Under Review” for two to four weeks, and that status does not mean a record exists. “No Items Found” in a status lookup can mean the tracking information was entered incorrectly. Open the control number to obtain the actual certificate rather than submitting a status screenshot as a completed clearance.

Resolve the record issue with the responsible office

For Ohio history that appears inaccurate, obtain your personal BCI response and supporting agency or court documents, then contact the office responsible for the entry. BCI’s own-history guidance distinguishes that process from a public court search. The Sheriff taking fingerprints is not automatically the custodian of the underlying court disposition.

For a Pennsylvania record-content concern, ask the PATCH helpline about the personal access-and-review route and the documentation needed. If the question is the outcome of a Delaware County charge, obtain the order through the county’s judicial-record service and keep it with the State Police response. Record review, a correction to inaccurate data and a court-ordered restriction on an accurate record are distinct tasks.
